The source of this fear can be a number of different things for different people, but here are three ways that can hopefully help lessen the fear for you.
1. Seek Distraction While in the Dentist’s Chair
For a lot of people, the sounds and sights of the dentist’s office can trigger the fear. The sounds of polishers or rinsers and the sights of drills and other utensils can strike fear into anyone. In order to combat this common source of the fear, you should seek distraction from these stimuli in any way you can. Whether it is watching TV or a video or even listening to some music, these distractions can make a visit to the dentist more bearable.
2. Use Relaxation Techniques
You would be amazed and surprised at what slowing down your breathing and being mindful can do. When we approach something we are scared of (such as the dentist), our heart rate and breathing frequency skyrocket and can whip us up into a frenzy. But by controlling your breathing and reassuring that the dentist is only there to help you; you will hopefully be able to lessen or even overcome this fear of the dentist.
3. Simply Talk to the Dentist About Your Fears
But perhaps the best way to deal with these is to face them head on and be forward with your dentist about the fact that you are scared. As mentioned previously, a fear of the dentist is extremely common, and thus, your dentist is aware of the fear and likely knows ways to lessen it and help you feel better. By letting the dentist know, you will feel more in control and safe, knowing that they are aware of your fears.
