The modern day is definitely the age of the internet and social media. Seemingly everybody is using the internet and social media daily. And while these things are great and can connect people all over the world, they aren’t always good. There are some real negatives that can potentially come along with social media use, and here are three of them.
1. It Can Hurt Real Life Interactions
With so many of our day to day interactions taking place over technology and various devices, this can hurt our real world social skills. Think about just how much interactions we do on our phones and computer. Between social media, texting and emails, we rarely have the need to talk in person. Real time interaction has so much more to offer than a social media or online conversation and it is sad to see so many people sacrifice real life conversation for online interaction.
2. Open Up Opportunity for Cyber-Bullying
While the immediacy of social media can account for great back and forth between friends, it also opens up the possibility for bullying at a rate never seen before. Also, the anonymity of most social media avenues allows for people to bully and spout off in a way that would never happen in face to face. It has been reported that about 42% of the youth have said that they have been victim to cyber bullying. This bullying is just as harmful as the traditional view and can lead to lasting scars.
3. Decrease Your Privacy and Productivity
While social media opens up so much opportunity in our lives, but it can also lead to some pretty harmful decreases in our life. First of all, having multiple open social media accounts opens up your life to almost everyone and thus greatly decreases your privacy. It is a strange world when you can know a ton about a person without ever meeting them. And secondly, your productivity can suffer greatly due to social media. This is because it is so available and always updating, it can be very easy to waste hours and hours on these when you should be working.
