This is an extremely common problem that millions and millions Americans deal with on a consistent basis. So what to do when you are suffering from constipation? Well, read on and check out these three tips that will help you get over your problem in no time.

1. Drink a lot of Water

The first thing you should always do when you feel constipated is to drink a ton of water. This should be between 8-10 glasses per day, but can be more if you choose. The reason this is such a great tip is because constipation is actually caused by lack of moisture in the stool, which makes it very difficult to pass. By drinking a lot of water, you will soften the stool and get over your constipation.

2. Increase Your Fiber and Change Your Diet

Another thing you should do if you are constipated is to jack up your fiber intake. Fiber is a natural stool bulker and softener and will greatly help you with your constipation issues. You should be getting between 20 and 35 g of fiber a day. There are a ton of great and delicious sources of fiber such as: whole grains, fruits, veggies, beans and more. In addition to this, there are some foods you should avoid while constipated such as processed food, meats and dairy products.

3. Take Laxatives or other Extreme Measure

If you are downing water by the glass and getting more than enough fiber and still nothing, it may be time to take a more extreme route in your battle against constipation. This can be things like enemas or even laxatives. However, not all laxatives are created equal. Some laxatives are fairly weak and are hardly more than fiber supplements (Metamucil), while others (such as Dulcolax) actually affect the muscles in your colon to push the stool out. If you are concerned about picking the right one, you should seek out the opinion of a medical professional.
