While the quality of the food we eat is a problem, perhaps the biggest issue in our largely unhealthy diets is the portion size. Pretty much everybody eats way more than they need to sustain their nutrition and hunger levels. If you have this issue, don’t worry, here are three things you can do to trick your body into eating less.
1. Don’t Get Distracted When You Eat
According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the more distracted we are, the more we eat. If we are distracted by watching TV or playing a game, we are just shoveling food into our mouths without thought while our attention is elsewhere. But if we just eat at a table without these distractions, we are much more likely to stop eating much quicker and obviously, eat less food in the process.
2. Use Smaller Plates
This one is fairly simple, and really quite genius if you think about it. Most of us have large plates that (if packed) can often fit much more food than we need. By using smaller plates, we will have better portion control and be able to notice more frequently how much food we are eating. It is likely your will serve yourself much less overall if you use smaller bowls and plates than if you use bigger.
3. Know Your “Food Weaknesses”
Let’s face it, we all have certain types of food or flavors that we just can’t get enough of. These are the foods that as long as they are in front of your face, you will eat then, even if you’re not hungry. If you make yourself aware of your specific food weaknesses, you will be better equipped to deal with the cravings of them. Come up with various solutions or a plan as to how you can stop overeating these certain foods, and you will be well on your way to eating less.
