Barefoot running is for idiots.
Sure, the footwear is bizarre, but the logic behind barefooting is solid. Most adults are simply too accustomed to a heel-strike running style to make that change. When they do, they often don’t allow sufficient adaptation time, suffering fractures and strains. It’s not the barefoot running, but their lifetime of running that catches up to them.
