In today’s day and age where a large majority of the population sits for hours and hours out of the day at office jobs, it is important we get up and move around often. Of course, sitting for the most part is fine, but if you do it for too long too often is not a good idea. Sitting for too long can be bad for you in a number of different ways, including these three reasons.
1. Problems to Posture
This is probably the most common of all the reasons not too sit for too long and that is because it can cause serious issues to your posture. The types of the body that are most affected negatively by sitting for too long are the back, neck and shoulders. Most people tend to slouch, lean back or lean forward when sitting and don’t exhibit proper posture. This could lead you to have severe pain and injury as a result. If you must sit for long periods of time, you should make sure to keep your back, neck and shoulders straight and aligned.
2. Muscle Degradation
What a lot of people don’t realize is that even when we are just simply standing or walking around, our muscles are putting in work. However, when we sit our body’s muscles are activated at all, especially when it comes to abs and hips. By sitting for too long your hips can become very tight which can make you uncomfortable and take away a lot of your flexibility, which can lead to even further injuries.
3. Could Potentially Damage Your Organs
While this is likely fairly rare, it is possible and this alone should be reason enough to not be sedentary all day. One such example is that sitting for too long can have negative effects on your pancreas as it could lead to increased production of insulin, which could lead to things such as diabetes and some possibilities of cancer. Your heart is also affected negatively by sitting around all day as it slows blood flow which slows down the burning of fat.
